I think the trash can ordinance is a fine idea, but I'd like to see some care taken with our trash cans by the collectors in return.

When I lived on 7th street, the crew simply threw can and all into their truck and crushed it. Twice. And they harrassed my wife when she caught them the second time destroying our trash cans.

And where I live now, my trash can is cracked and tearing at the top from where the collectors simply throw it back into the yard.

So if you're going to require us to place all our trash in cans to keep the area nice, let's do something about keeping our cans nice too, please.

Thanks for your comment, Mr. Benedict.

I have had many calls from citizens expressing their frustration with the way Republic Services/Jamax handles our trash cans and lids. It needs to be made clear to both the waste hauler and the people in city government who contract our waste hauling -- the Board of Public Works and Safety -- that the equipment citizens provide needs to be respected and treated better.

The best way to do that is to contact both of those entities to express your displeasure with the service you are getting. When the Board of Public Works and Safety considers our next waste hauling contract, citizens who are fed up will need to speak up.

All the current effort is trying to do is tighten up the code to make it clear that household trash will be placed in a can. I don't think that's too much to ask; I hope you agree.
