Voter registration event scheduled for tonight at Frog's By Erica Scott The Voter Registration event, a project of George Shumay, is tonight from 6 to 8 at Frog's Bistro, 810 Wabash Ave. The purpose of this event is to encourage students and people of the Terre Haute community to get involved in the upcoming City Primary Election by registering to vote. Volunteers will be there to help register voters, explain the district and precinct boundaries and help identify polling places for the primary election on May 6. The voter registration deadline is Monday, April 7. The two candidates for the upcoming May 6 Primary Election are Todd Nation, owner of downtown Terre Haute's BookNation, and Mick Love. Whomever wins the primary will be running against Republican Mark May in the November election. George Shumay, owner of the Coffee Grounds and Nation's campaign manager, said, "ISU students, faculty and staff could become a defining force in local politics if they were motivated to vote. Our campaign to get Todd elected to the City Council depends to some extent on getting the ISU community to register, study the candidates and make informed choices. Together we can make a difference." Todd has a long background of connections to the Terre Haute community, downtown and the ISU campus. Some of his key points that he plans to achieve if elected are: Keeping Terre Haute clean. Saving buildings and bringing new businesses to the downtown area. Trying to open up a Web site for Terre Haute. "I think it is important for the city to work with ISU, so that the route that people walk through as far as the neighborhoods and downtown are clean and friendly," Nation said. "Todd is a progressive thinker and willing to say what he feels, and he has a lot of support from the ISU community," Shumay said. For more information about Todd Nation and his plans, visit his Web site at www.toddnation.com. Mick Love's key points that he plans to achieve if elected are: Lowering gas, sales and cigarette taxes. Working with the community to improve the streets and sidewalks. "I agree with the Will tax, which is the tax you pay on your license, because the money is used to pave streets. There have been three new taxes recently and I plan to lower as many taxes as possible," Love said. |
