1. My Candidacy, by Todd Nation

When I told one of my politician friends I had declared candidacy for the City Council's 4th district, he quipped: "If you win that seat, it'll serve you right!" More often though, the subject of my first run for office begs a question: "Why would you want to do that?"

The honest answer is, because I think I can help move Terre Haute forward. As a small business owner and smart growth advocate, I have learned the importance of cooperation, accessibility and integrity. I'm ready to work from within the City Council to help ingrain those qualities more deeply into our local government.

The people who have worked with me closely over the last decade, like my fellow volunteers from the boards of Downtown Terre Haute Inc, Terre Haute Landmarks, Farrington's Grove Historical District and TREES Inc, have greeted the news of my entree into local politics with the comment I'm hearing the most: "It's about time! Tell me what I can do to help!"

Even if you don't live in the 4th District, there are several concrete things you can do to help me win this election. Send my committee a check (see the last article below for details). Educate yourself about the new district boundaries, consider who you know inside the district, and tell them about my candidacy. Forward, or print and pass on, this email newsletter (it should fit on the front and back of a single page). Plan or attend a Todd Nation for City Council fundraiser. Vote!

Winning this election is an achievable goal, but it will take time, money,
and a lot of help from my friends. Thanks for your interest in my campaign.

2. The 4th District: Heart of the City

Terre Haute's 4th City Council District now stretches from a zig-zagging northern border (6th Avenue, 8th Avenue and Buckeye Street) to its solid Hulman Street southern border, and from the river's edge at the west to an eastern boundary that shifts between 7th and 12th Streets.

Put another way, the district includes all of Farrington's Grove, Downtown and Indiana State University. It also contains a big slice of the Avenues and Terre Haute's core riverfront properties.

After last October's redistricting, the 4th expanded from 6 to 8 precincts. The following Harrison Township precincts now constitute the 4th District:

1-A, 1-C, 1-D, 2-C, 2-E, 5-B, 5-C, 5-D

In my next newsletter, I will include a link to an updated district map.

3. Voter Registration

To vote in this year's May Primary Election, you must be registered by 4:00 p.m. Monday, April 7th, 2003. You can get a registration form at BookNation, the Coffee Grounds (Downtown & ISU), the Post Office, the Public Library or Voter Registration in the ground floor of the Vigo County Courthouse. Mail-in registrations must be individually postmarked on or before April 7.

If you know that you will not be available to vote on election day, you can cast an absentee ballot. Absentee voters must submit an application for a mail-in ballot by midnight April 28, 2003. Absentee votes may be cast in person at the Clerk's Office in the Vigo County Courthouse from April 7, 2003 until noon, May 5, 2003. County office hours are M - F, 8:00 - 4:00.

4. How You Can Help My Campaign

One of the things that has kept me away from electoral politics until now has been my unwillingness to ask people for money. I'm told that as a candidate, I have to get over that reluctance, so here goes...

This is a real-world campaign that will require real funding to win.
Please send a check to:

Todd Nation for City Council
677 Wabash Ave.
Terre Haute, IN 47807

I also need volunteers willing to help canvas neighborhoods, distribute yard signs, organize and attend fundraising events, etc. Please contact me soon with your questions, offers or ideas.

Let's win this one!
