TODD NATION FOR CITY COUNCIL: APRIL 1 NEWS

1. Tools for the Informed Voter

Many of the people I am reaching out to in this campaign are relative newcomers to Terre Haute. Family, work, school and other reasons have brought us together to live here, but many citizens are reluctant to get involved in local politics, even as voters.

To the casual observer, the local political scene can seem confusing; we have two, elected Judy Andersons in office now, and sorting that out is just the beginning. Getting acquainted with local politics and politicians is not an easy task, and the candidate with the most visible yard signs may not always be the one who deserves your support--so where is a curious voter supposed to turn?

My personal favorite has always been live Candidate Forums, like the one scheduled for 6:30 p.m. today, April 1 (no foolin') at the Senior Citizen's Center, 5th and Poplar. The doors open at 6:00, and many candidates will be on hand to meet voters before the program begins. Organized by board members of the Farrington's Grove Historical District, this forum is a good opportunity to meet the people running for City Council and Mayor. Each candidate will make a brief statement, then those running for Mayor will field audience questions. The FGHD forum is free and open to the public.

For those who can't make it to this evening's forum, there are at least three ways to read about the candidates in our own words:

1. The Tribune-Star will compile and publish the results of their Candidate Questionnaire sometime in April. Be on the lookout for this important spread--it's a chance to compare candidate bios, and stands on issues chosen by journalists.

2. A less-structured set of Candidate Essays will appear in April's edition of the Terre Haute Journal of Business. All candidates were offered space for a 500-word presentation on subjects of their choice. The Journal's street date is April 7th; be on the lookout for a copy, or go to www.thjournal.com to read the essays online.

3. At least one candidate has a web site: Me! Go to www.toddnation.com to check out what I have to say about local economic development efforts, strengthening neighborhoods, why I'm running for office and more.

Please take the time to learn about the candidates for local office before casting your ballot on May 6. If you want to talk to me about an issue, don't hesitate to call or write--my contact info is at the end of this newsletter.

2. Come to Frog's Bistro This Wednesday: Voter Registration Ends April 7!

Since voters in the May 6 Primary must be registered by 4:00 p.m. Monday, April 7, my campaign is conducting another Voter Registration Drive this Wednesday, April 2. Drop by the second floor of Frog's Bistro between 6:00 and 8:00 for some hors d'oeuvres and help with your paperwork. We'll have it all there at this free event: district maps, polling place addresses, forms, etc. As my Campaign Manager George Shumay said about our first VR Drive: We make it easy--just show up!

For those who can't make it, forms are available at BookNation, both Coffee Grounds locations, the Voter Registration office in the Courthouse, the Public Library and many other places. Please help us make sure the District 4 voters that you know are registered and prepared to vote--we have less than a week to file the paperwork.

For info about whether or not you are registered, address corrections, etc, call Voter Registration at 462-3393.
