....................................................................................... Tools for the Informed Voter Many of the people I am reaching out to in this campaign are relative newcomers to Terre Haute. Family, work, school and other reasons have brought us together to live here, but many citizens are reluctant to get involved in local politics, even as voters. To the casual observer, the local political scene can seem confusing; we have two, elected Judy Andersons in office now, and sorting that out is just the beginning. Getting acquainted with local politics and politicians is not an easy task, and the candidate with the most visible yard signs may not always be the one who deserves your support--so where is a curious voter supposed to turn? My personal favorite has always been live Candidate Forums, like the two April events detailed below: The Central Labor Council will host Meet the Candidates on Monday, April 21 at 6:00 p.m. at the Labor Temple, 39 S. 13th Street. The League of Women Voters, the Tribune Star, the NAACP and the Vigo County Public Library will host a Candidate Forum on Thursday, April 24 at 7:00 p.m. at the Vigo County Annex, 1st and Oak. There are also at least three ways to read about the candidates: 1. The Tribune-Star will compile and publish the results of their Candidate Questionnaire sometime in April. Be on the lookout for this important spread--it's a chance to compare candidate bios, and our stands on issues chosen by those who report on them. 2. A less-structured set of Candidate Essays will appear in April's edition of the Terre Haute Journal of Business. All candidates were offered space for a 500-word presentation on subjects of their choice. The Journal's street date is April 7th; be on the lookout for a copy, or go to www.thjournal.com to read the essays online. 3. At least one candidate has a web site: Me! Point your browser to www.toddnation.com to check out what I have to say about local economic development efforts, strengthening neighborhoods, why I'm running for office and more. Please take the time to learn about candidates for local office before casting your ballot on May 6. If you want to talk to me about an issue, just call or write; my contact info is at the end of this newsletter. ....................................................................................... Voter Registration Ends Monday, April 7! Voters in the May 6 Primary must be registered by 4:00 p.m. Monday, April 7. Forms are available at BookNation, both Coffee Grounds locations, the Voter Registration office in the Courthouse, the Public Library and many other places. Please help us make sure the District 4 voters that you know are registered and prepared to vote--we have less than a week to file the paperwork. For info about whether or not you are registered, address corrections, etc, call Voter Registration at 462-3393.
