April Events: Saturday Night Party and Tuesday Fundraiser

All supporters of my candidacy are invited to the upcoming events planned by my campaign. Come downtown and talk to me about issues, check out some colorful local places, and have some fun!

The "Todd Nation for City Council Party" this Saturday night should be memorable--my brother Tim's band, The City Squirrels, will play a couple of sets of rock and roll upstairs at Frog's Bistro, 810 Wabash Avenue. Doors open at 8:00, and the band's first set should start at 9:00. A cash bar and some hors d'oeuvres will be provided, and we should finish up around 11:00.

A more traditional "Todd Nation for City Council Fundraiser" is planned for the evening of Tuesday, April 29 at the Coffee Grounds, 423 Wabash Avenue. Drop by after work, from 5:00 until 7:00, for a snack and a visit.

Donations will be gratefully accepted, but there is no charge for either of these events. Free yard signs, t-shirts and buttons supporting my campaign will be distributed both nights. See you there!

Why Me?

After a couple of months on the campaign trail, I'm getting a pretty good idea of what is on the minds of Terre Haute voters as they size up candidates in the May 6 city primary. The message that I'm hearing loud and clear is that this community is ready for significant change in leadership. This is good news for my campaign and for my hometown--I want to be part of reshaping local government, and the time is right for us to step away from politics as usual.

As a downtown business owner, former leader of our local Main Street program and past board member of Farrington's Grove's neighborhood association, I have personally experienced the challenges of living and making a living in the 4th District for over a decade. There are many specific things that successful communities take for granted that we cannot seem to manage with our current government team--we can do better!

City government can help strengthen neighborhoods throughout Terre Haute by supporting the workers who enforce our codes on trash collection, junked vehicles, property maintenance and animal control. Arresting arsonists, picking up leaves and cleaning streets are all areas of city government responsibility that are ripe for improvement. The list of problems is long, and many of these problems have developed and compounded over time.

As a life-long Democrat, my orientation has always been toward the "people side" of government--how policies affect citizens in their day-to-day lives. It is time for a new generation of Democratic leadership in Terre Haute; I am ready to be part of it if 4th District voters will give me the chance.

Anybody Can Vote Absentee All Month!

Changes in state election law have made voting easier than ever. Many voters have already cast absentee ballots in the May 6 Primary Election, some in person at the Vigo County Court House, others via mail.

When I showed up at the Court House to vote absentee on April 7, workers pointed out that nobody "needs a reason" to be given an absentee ballot now. In effect, we all have a month to find time to cast a ballot this primary season, in person or from the comfort of home.

Walk-in Absentee Voting in the Court House began the first Monday in April and will end at noon on May 5 (the day before the election). The polling place is open Monday - Saturday from 8 to 4. For info about whether or not you are registered, address changes, etc. call Voter Registration at 462-3393.

Absentee ballots can also be cast by mail or with the aid of a Travelling Board. Call the Clerk's Office for forms, hours, or other Absentee Voting info: 462-3235.
