Voter Registration Event Targets Citizens and Students

A Voter Registration event this Wednesday evening at Frog's Bistro, 810 Wabash Avenue, will encourage students, Terre Haute newcomers, and those with questions about where they vote to get involved in the upcoming City Primary Election. "Student Local Voter Registration Night" will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. upstairs. Frog's will provide snacks, and the public is welcome.

Volunteers will be on hand to register voters, explain the district and precinct boundaries, and help identify polling places for the May 6 Primary Election. With the Monday, April 7 voter registration deadline less than a week away, campaign committees are working overtime to get voters signed up.

"Student Local Voter Registration Night" is a project of George Shumay, owner of the Coffee Grounds and Campaign Manager for Todd Nation, candidate for City Council 4th District. Of the idea, Shumay said "ISU students, faculty and staff could become a defining force in local politics if they were motivated to vote. Our campaign to get Todd elected to the City Council depends to some extent on getting the ISU community to register, study the candidates and make informed choices. Together, we can make a difference."

Todd Nation, owner of downtown Terre Haute's BookNation, is a first-time candidate for public office. Nation stated "The Fourth District is made up of Farrington's Grove, Downtown, ISU, the Avenues, and the neighborhood around Union Hospital. I've spent most of my adult life living and working in this district, and I'm confident that I can represent my neighbors well as their City Councilman."

"This part of the city has so much potential, but most of it remains untapped," Nation continued. "We have all seen the results of politics as usual in Terre Haute; we're all going to have to work together to usher in a new generation Democratic leadership. To do this, we need to overcome the apathy that plagues citizens and students alike. Your vote matters, and progress begins in the voting booth."
